Description

For sale: a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta (Series 2), featuring its original black Como license plate and the multi-page registration booklet from its 1968 re-registration. The car underwent a complete restoration between 2008 and 2010.

It is registered with the ASI (Automotoclub Storico Italiano) and comes with a technical valuation report for insurance purposes, conducted in 2016.

The vehicle is in excellent overall condition; the interior and upholstery were replaced with new materials in 2008, and the mechanical components are in excellent, road-ready condition.

Model history and curiosity

The story of the Giulietta Spider began in the mid-1950s, driven by a strategic vision and demand from foreign markets. American importers, led by Max Hoffman, strongly advocated for an open-top, youthful car that could replicate the success of the sedan and coupé versions. Despite initial resistance from Alfa Romeo’s top management—who were concerned about development costs—the project moved forward, with the design of the bodywork entrusted to Pininfarina.

Battista Farina and his team created a true masterpiece of style, characterized by clean lines, smooth flanks, and an elegant wraparound windshield. Unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, the car captivated the public by blending the elegance of Italian design with the spirited performance of the renowned aluminum twin-cam engine.

The 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider (Tipo 101.03) represents the standard "Normale" version—a left-hand-drive model belonging to the updated series.

In 1959, the project transitioned from the original 750 chassis to the 101 series, introducing significant aesthetic and technical refinements:
- Extended wheelbase: The wheelbase was increased from 2,200 mm to 2,250 mm (+5 cm), offering substantially better interior space and improved ride comfort.
- Door vent windows: Adjustable vent windows (deflectors) were added, along with redesigned door handles and locks.
- Taillights: Larger, integrated taillights (replacing the very small units found on the early 750 series) were introduced, now incorporating reflectors.
- Revised interior: The dashboard was updated, finishes were enhanced, and a glove compartment with a door—as well as an anti-glare rearview mirror—were added. The 101.03 model features the classic Alfa Romeo front shield—redesigned compared to the 750 series—flanked by the iconic chrome "whiskers." The door handles are of the recessed, push-button type.

Between 1959 and 1962, a total of approximately 14,300 Giulietta Spider "Normale" units were produced (series 101.03, and 101.08 for right-hand drive).
The Giulietta Spider is considered one of the most usable and reliable classic cars; its aluminum mechanical components were advanced for the time—lightweight and still remarkably lively, even in modern-day traffic.

Created to conquer the United States, the Spider soon became a symbol of the *dolce vita* and freedom on four wheels in Europe as well. It was an enduring success that, through continuous technical and aesthetic refinements, cemented its place in history as one of the most beloved and collectible convertibles of all time.
